James D. Collins Obituary

Dr. James Daly Collins 69 of Yarmouthport passed away from melanoma on August 8, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family. His death was as peaceful as he was in life. Jim was born in Boston, the son of the late Bernard and M. Agnes (Conley) Collins, and raised and educated in Norwood. After graduating from Norwood High School, Jim devoted his life to education and schools. He earned a Masters degree from Boston State and a Ph.D. from Boston College. He worked at the Riverview School in Sandwich and was the former Superintendent for Wareham Public Schools. He also served as a member of the Dennis-Yarmouth School Board. During his career in education, Jim earned his J.D. at New England School of Law and was honored to be sworn in at the Supreme Court of the United States. In retirement, he followed his passion for helping others by doing work as a special education attorney and volunteering with the Consumer Assistance Council. Jim was an avid runner and ran in the Boston Marathon in his youth and could be seen running in his neighbor hood daily until his recent ill- ness. He also loved traveling with his brothers Paul, Bern, and Paul Dillen and sailing their boat, the Saoirse. He is survived by his wife Elaine Hintsa Collins; his daughters and sons-in-law Natalie Collins and Brendan Rice, Charlotte Collins and John Marceline; his grandchildren Alina Telch Marceline, Harrison Collins Rice, Audrey Daly Marceline, and Maxwell Collins Rice; his siblings and their spouses Bern Collins and Margaret Osborne Collins, Barbara and Paul Butters, Paul Collins and Ginny Pender Collins, and John A. Collins. The family would like to thank VNA Hospice Care for their wonderful care and thoughtfulness toward the family. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday August 16 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth. Interment will be private.
